Project in a Nutshell:
Improve the efficiency and accuracy of sales tax audits conducted within the state.
The California State Board of Equalization (SBOE) audits businesses to ensure that sales taxes are being collected and remitted to the state accurately. For decades audits were performed using spreadsheets, which led to errors and inefficiencies. We partnered with the SBOE to design and develop a database management system to address these shortcomings.
The new application was to be used in the field, where most audits are conducted. Additionally, the solution we were developing needed to provide a variety of reports.
Goals and Objectives
Use technology to reduce average hours per audit while simultaneously reducing errors.Auditors are under pressure to reduce the average number of hours spent per audit, but they also must ensure that each audit is performed accurately. The primary goal of this project was to deliver a custom software solution that could deliver both. Additionally, it had to work well in the field, especially if connectivity was poor or unavailable.
Unique Challenges
Many audits were conducted in areas where internet connectivity was poor or unavailable.Many audits are conducted in areas with poor connectivity, therefore we needed to devise a solution that was not dependent on being online all the time. This limitation posed significant challenges to the design, architecture and testing of the project.
The Results
Average time per audit reduced 28%. Auditing errors dropped more than 15% in 16 weeks.The solution we delivered to the State of California, which is used by every sales tax auditor in the state, is modern, user-friendly, and employs an innovative sync engine to mitigate connectivity issues. This solution has led to a significant reduction in average auditing hours and errors, two core goals.
